The stage is now set for the conduct of the re-run election, to fill the vacant seat caused by the death of Late Senator Ignatius Longjan, after the major contesting political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress have conducted their primaries and produced candidates for the Election.
The PDP and the APC have transparently produced their candidates in their primaries, which both held in Shendam, in Shendam Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.
While, Prof. Nora Daduut pulled 1,936 votes to emerge as the APC candidate for the Plateau South Senatorial rerun, Rt. Hon. George Daika, pulled 434 votes to become the flag bearer of the PDP in the coming contest.
The former Plateau State House of Assembly Speaker and former member of the Green Chambers, Rt. Hon. George Edward Daika, defeated four aspirants to emerged the PDP;s flag bearer for the October 31, 2020, Plateau South Senatorial bye-election.
The runner up in the election, who is also a former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Michael Dapianlong garnered 199 votes. Others are, Barr. Philip Nyitni having, 18 votes, while Crysantus Dawam got 5 votes.
The total number of invalid votes was 4.
It is of note that, Hon. Ja’afaru Damulak in a gentleman arrangement had voluntarily stepped down for Crysantus Dawam, before voting began.
You would recall that, Hon. Ja’afaru Damulak, is a two term member of the House of Representatives and had represented Shendam, Quan-Pan, Mikang Federal Constituency, from 1999 to 2007.
With the development and weighing the Daika and Daduut as candidates of PDP and APC, pundits in the state have opined that, “The contest is between an Experienced Man and a Novice, on the political chase board”.
