The Plateau State Sports Council has promised to start preparation for the next National Sports Festival, “Edo 2020”, in earnest, as it plans to improve on its showing in the 19th edition of the National Sports Festival, “Abuja 2018”.

Simon Moven, the Acting Director of Sports, Plateau state has assured that the Sports Council would equally start its preparation for the National Youth Sports Festival, coming up later in the year.

Moven told REALITY exclusively that, “I can assure you that preparation for Edo 2020 will start in earnest because we intend to improve on our performance. The same goes with the preparation for the National Youth Games”.

You would recall that Plateau state came 14th overall in the country and 3rd amongst the 19 Northern states, at the recently concluded 19th National Sports Festival in Abuja, which many observers feel the state could have done better considering that some of its athletes represented other states and won medals for them.

To achieve success in all competitions the state athletes participate this year, the Acting Director of Sports said the sports council intends to review its performance and, as a way of moving forward and improving the athletes’ performance, it plans to restructure the sports council and go back to the grass root.

Moven, expressed his appreciation to the Plateau State Government, led by Governor Simon Bako Lalong, for the support given to sports in the state, which has resulted in the state athletes winning medals at various events and competitions they have participate in.

He said, “We will restructure the sports council for progress especially in coaching by sending our coaches for refresher courses. We also intend to send some of our sports secretaries for further studies as this will enhance their performance and at the end help our athletes improve. We also intend to go back to the grass root to unearth raw talents”.

On the athletes that performed well for the state, Moven said, excellent performance by athletes would be rewarded with employment with the state Sports Council, if the athlete is not on the employment of the Council already.
