Vice Chancellor Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku (FAS) on Monday 22nd October, 2018 congratulated the graduating students of Nigeria Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), on their induction into the profession and urged them to be good ambassadors of their profession.
Ahaneku while speaking at the Induction Ceremony for 2018, Graduate Animal Scientists, GAS, which held at Unizik School Auditorium, said, “I congratulate you all this day. You are moving to the larger society and I urge you to be good ambassadors of your various Institutions. Go out there and make the necessary impact in the society.
Registrar of NIAS, Prof. E.A Iyayi, while inducting the graduates added by saying, Having been found worthy both in character and learning, and by the power imposed on me, I admit and induct you all into NIAS family”.
“I urge you all, to regularly update your professional knowledge, skill and competence.”
President of NIAS, Prof. Israel Adu, while delivering his address encouraged the young graduates to be role models of the profession.
He further explained more about the profession saying, “NAIS is a professional body and a regulatory agency of the federal government of Nigeria who prescribe and regulate the standard attained by those seeking to be members, associates or fellows of the institute”.
The president also tasked the graduates who were initiated into the practice to add their potentials in bringing sanity to the handling of animal products.
According to him, “Animal scientists have the primary responsibility from production to marketing of animal products”.
He concluded by saying, “The challenge ahead is enormous and should be tackled with wisdom, resilience and commitment. Live up to the standard expected of you. You must not be involved in fraud and you are expected to bring your best to the practice”.
Dr. Mrs Codilia Ebenebe, Associate Prof. Uni-zik threw more light on NIAS, saying, “Animal science is a profession with huge potential. A lot of students dont know about this secret.
“This is a profession that after graduation you dont need to carry your CV looking for job. It is a profession that teaches about production of meat, milk and egg from so many animals and livestock”.
She advised the young graduates to start their own production. They should be practitioners of Animal science. They should be employers of labour.
Best graduating student, Miss Bassey, Ediong a graduate from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, while speaking to reporters after the ceremony expressed her excitement admitting that she feels blessed, saying, “I am very happy to be awarded and certified as the best graduating student. Am inspired by this achievement and I give all glory to God. I only did my best and God did the rest.”
The inductees were made up of students from various institutions namely: University of Nigeria, Nsuka, Enugu state, Niger Delta University, Welberforce Island, Bayelsa State, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra state, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.
Others are: Federal University of Technology, Owerri , Imo State, Enugu State University of Science and Technology and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, Anambra state.
The graduates during the induction took oath of allegiance to abide by the ethics of the profession and discharge their responsibility in true conscience, diligence and dignity.
