By: Ifeanyi Okonkwo (Anambra),

Anambra State Law makers on Tuesday 7th of August, 2018, at plenary passed into Law, a Bill to prohibit the hawking and false advertisement of any medicinal drug and connected purposes in the state.

Chairman House Committee on Health, who is also the chief sponsor of the Bill, Hon. (Pharm.) Nnamdi G. Okafor, member representing Awka South 1 constituency, in his submission said this bill if passed into law will protect the citizens of the state from taking proper and quality drugs from registered and authorized drug dealers.

“Drugs are intended to be stored in a specific temperature recommended and when drugs are been hawked, these temperatures are no longer maintained”.

“Many of the dealers mislead the people by listing several illnesses that can be cured by just one drug. This is unacceptable. Bad enough, some of the buyers don’t even know the content of the drugs”.

“Any medication under excessive heat according to science can be toxic and can cause havoc to the body system”, he stated.

He further stated that, “One of the main reasons of this law is to protect Ndi-Anambra, because many of these hawkers don’t have a specific location or address and as such cannot be held responsible when this drug harm its buyers”.

“For any drug to be sold it has to be approved by NAFDAC but it’s sad to know that some of these drugs sold on the street have not passed the required process and are not even registered”.

“We are not trying to promote or bring down anybody. We want the best for our people. If those affected by this law feel their products are good enough, they should get a location where they can be located”.

“Any media house, who allows hawkers to advertise their products, will face the consequences”.

After a report from the committee, the bill was read for the third time and was passed into Law by the Speaker of the House.
