By: Valentine Adese,
Despite the gale of defections of Governors, Senators and House of Representatives members from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) through last week, the family of the APC in Plateau state has remained in an alleged grave yard peace and unity.
Just within the week under review, 2 governors, 15 senators and 37 House of Representatives members have formally defected from the APC to the PDP.
The two governors, who defected, are governors of Benue and Sokoto states, along with most of their State Houses of Assembly Legislators, Local Government Chairmen and Councilors.
However, the situation in Plateau state chapter of the APC has remained that of an alleged united family.
To demonstrate this alleged oneness of the APC family in the state, apart from Governor Simon Lalong, nobody else has shown interest either verbally or through body language for the governorship seat in the ruling APC.
You would recall that the party members before the Ward and Local Government Congresses of the state, had unanimously adopted the state Governor, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong, as its candidate for the 2019 election.
The state party Chairman, Hon. Latep Dabang, who once said that Lalong would not be given automatic ticket, when the face-off between him and some members of the state EXCO of the party lingered over his ambition to become the State Chairman of Political Parties’ Advisory Council, seems to have changed his stands when he now holds that “Everyone is free to contest the seat, but such a person would only be wasting both time and resources.”
Although it is alleged that peace exists in the chapter, the face-off between the Minister for Youth and Sport, Barr. Solomon Dalung, the APC Chairman and the Governor have not been addressed, despite 5 months count down to the 2019 general elections and few weeks to the gubernatorial primary in the state.
The untold political tension in Kanam Local Government chapter of the APC is another silent killer and inimical to the unity of the party, as the gubernatorial primary elections approaches in the state.
This is because, the rumoured Court ruling and Order that Hon. Abbas Adamu Wokdung, be issued with certificate of return, as APC Chairmanship Candidate for Kanam Local Government Council and withdraw the one earlier issued to Mohammed Abdullahi Barau, may not have been obeyed.
You would recall that, President Muhammadu Buhari, Ahmed Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar have their respective structures and followership in the APC family in Plateau state and with Atiku defecting to the PDP, there are strongly expressed feelings that his loyalists and supporters may also defect from the state chapter before or during the gubernatorial primary in the state.
Also untold is the fact that, Mr. Johnson Podar, is still challenging the emergence of the state Chairman of the party, Hon. Letep in court.
Feelers are that, no matter where the judgment swings, there is high propensity that defectors may emerge soon.
