By: Our Reporter,

PRESS STATEMENT BY ALL PROGRESSIVES PEOPLES CONGRESS (APC) ELDERS COUNCIL PLATEAU STATE CHAPTER, FOLLOWING THE RECENT KILLINGS IN SOME COMMUNITIES IN THE STATE

Gentlemen of the Press,

It is with a heavy heart that we issue this statement today. The unfortunate and wicked attacks on innocent citizens by militia herdsmen in some communities of Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Jos South, Mangu, and others in Bokkos and Bassa, must be condemned by all lovers of peace and humanity.

We commiserate with those, who lost their lives and those injured. May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace, amen.

Gentlemen of the Press, we want to commend the Plateau State Government for taking immediate steps which in no small measure brought the situation under control. We also commend the security agencies for the decisive action taken to stem the tide of carnage witnessed during the attacks. We must also appreciate the efforts of religious and community leaders and the people themselves, who made sure the violence, did not escalate.

The APC Elders Council on the Plateau welcomes President Muhammadu Buhari’s and Vice President Osinbajo’s visits to commiserate with our people over the sad incident which to a large extent demonstrated the FG’s commitment to the maintenance of peace and security not only in Plateau State, but all over the nation. We also thank many other individuals and groups from within and outside the country who identified with us at this moment of our grief.

We are convinced that the protection of lives and property of citizens remains the primary responsibility of Government. In this regard, we urge that the deployment of security personnel and equipment should be sustained to ward off further attacks.

We also support Governor Simon Lalong’s call for an Emergency Special Intervention Fund to help communities sacked by the militia herdsmen go back to their land of inheritance and return to their normal lives.

Similarly, we strongly believe that time has come for Plateau State to be included in the North East Reconstruction Fund which did not receive the blessing of the National Assembly. When this is done, the state will be able to support the people build communities ravaged by these incessant attacks. From the history of the state, there is no place anybody can refer to as no man’s land as every land has ancestral and customary ownership.

We also call on the relevant agencies to review the security architecture in the state such that those who justified the recent attacks on innocent citizens are picked up and made to face the full wrath of the law.

This is not the time to make statements that are capable of aggravating the situation. The Rescue Administration of Governor Simon Bako Lalong has shown enough commitment towards the restoration of peace which we have enjoyed in the last 3 years. Let us join hands and keep the peace.

Long Live Plateau State

Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria
