PLATEAU: President Buhari Appeals for Peace, Gov. Ortom, Arrest Miyetti Allah Group, Gov. AL-makura, We Are Together With Plateau People

President Mohammadu Buhari has appealed to the people of Plateau State to bury their differences and work together for the peace of the State.

President Buhari , according to a statement issued by the Plateau state Commissioner of Information and Communication, Mr. Yakubu Dati, after the meeting with stakeholders on the current security situation held at the Banquet Hall of New Government House, Rayfield, Jos, condemned the crisis and urged the leadership at every level to be awake of their responsibility of driving the peace process.

“He commiserated with the bereaved and urged those present pass to his message of condolence to those who lost loved ones.” The release signed by Mr. Dati stated

Earlier in his, Governor, Simon Lalong, was said to have appreciated the President for coming personally, after the visit of Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, where far reaching decisions were reached after exhaustive discussions, attended by key stakeholders.

“Lalong outlined steps taken by the government to stem the escalation of the crisis, while further commending the additional critical support from the Federal Government.” Mr. Dati stated.

Speaking further, Governor Lalong was quoted to have told the President and other stakeholders presnt and sitting that, “arrests have been made and those implicated will face the full wrought of the law without fear or favour.”

Adding that, “Lalong condemned acts of  annexation of ancestral lands, cattle rustling and other vices that negate peace building. He thanked Mr. President for considering appeals for the establishment of Police mobile unit at Gashish and the request for compensation of victims.”

However, in his opening remarks, Prof. Sonni Tyoden, Deputy Governor of Plateau State observed a minute’s silence for the bereaved.

Earlier, according to the statement issued by the Hon. Commissioner, presentations were made by by Alh Mohammed Nura Chairman Miyette Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Mrs Florence Jambol, President of Berom Women Development Association (BEWDA).

The President was accompanied by Governors of Kebbi and Niger States, Ministers of Defence, Interior and that of Information and Communication. Also on his team where the security chiefs including the chief of Army staff, chief of Naval Staff, Inspector General of Police and others. The major stakeholders in attendance were senior government officials, National and state assembly members, Traditional Rulers, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ja’amatu Nasril Islam (JNI) and a cross section of the leaders of thought.

In another development, the Government and people of Nasarawa state and its counterpart in Benue state, Governor, Samuel Ortom have commiserated with Governor Simon Lalong and the entire people of Plateau State, over renewed attacks in the state, which have left many innocent people dead and property worth millions of naira destroyed.

In his condolence message signed by Yakubu Lamai, the SSA: Public Affairs & Media Strategy, to Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura of Nasarawa Sate, the Governor, condoled and sympathized with victims of families and the entire citizens of Plateau State at the sporadic, unwarranted and suspicious escalation of violence.

The statement in part, stated that, “The lives of our people in Nasarawa State are deeply entwined with those from Plateau State, not only because of our close borders, but also because of our common origin, shared interests and brotherly kinship.

“We use this medium to encourage His Excellency, Governor Simon Lalong and his Cabinet to remain steadfast in stemming the tide of violence; and we pray that God Almighty gives to Plateau State the peace that you seek and bring comfort to ease the pain of your loss.

“We the people of Nasarawa State stand with you and keep Plateau State in our thoughts, prayers and well-wishes during this dark time in your life.”

While, commiserating with Governor Lalong and the people of Plateau State, Governor Ortom condemns the attacks and describes the killing of children, women and other vulnerable people in Barkin Ladi as barbaric, inhuman and unfortunate.

Governor Ortom in a condolence message signed by his Press Secretary, Mr. Terver Akase, “The Governor urged security agencies to arrest for prosecution, the leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, who have claimed responsibility over the Plateau killings.”

Adding that,” Governor Ortom assures his counterpart, Governor Lalong that Benue will continue to stand with the people of Plateau in prayers until the orgy of violence over the state and other parts of the Middle Belt are brought to an end.”
