PAY CUT: ASUP GIVES BAUCHI STATE GOVT. 7 DAYS ULTIMATUM, CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF HEAD OF SERVICE

By: Luka Daniel (Bauchi),

Following alleged salary cut of Bauchi civil servants by the state government, the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic Bauchi chapter, has given the Bauchi State Government (BSG) a seven (7) ‎days ultimatum to reverse the irregularities or face industrial strike.

The ATAP branch Chairman of the Union, ‎Comrade, Bala Mohammed Yakubu who handed down the ultimatum yesterday said that the Union has sacrificed a lot while the state and the country entered recession.

“The Union vehemently and resolutely rejects the deduction and demands an immediate restoration of the moneys deducted from our members May, 2018 salaries and the immediate payment of salaries to our members who are yet to received their May salaries”. He demanded.

The Chairman of the Union further stated, The Union also demands for the implementation of Full CONPCASS salary structure and lower cadre migration before the expiration of the 7 days ultimatum, or the union will be left with no choice than to embark on an industrial action.

“We have sacrificed certain percentage of our entitlement in order to compliment government effort in ensuring that the educational sector doesnt collapse during the period”.

He maintained that since the country is now out of recession, and the Federal Government has given a time frame for the implementation of new minimum wage, the Union never expected a deduction in salary from the government but rather an increment through the implementation of lower cadre migration and other allowances that are not fully implemented as done in other Tertiary Institutions of learning.

Therefore, the Union wishes to remind the Head of Civil Service that Polytechnics salary structure is statutory in nature which became national policy of which every state willing to operate a state owned Polytechnic must comply as stipulated in the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) Scheme of Service/guidelines and approved by the previous administration. Yakubu emphasized.

He reminded the State Head of Civil Service that there are no illegal allowances in Tatari Ali Polytechnics as the Institution has different scheme of services compared to other state Ministries and Agencies of government.

The Union observed with greatest dismay that the salary of a teacher who made all other professions possible can be deducted overnight without any circular or consultation as stipulated in the civil service rules.

The Union while appreciating the effort of Governor Abubakar for prompt payment of salaries, urged him to remove the State Head of Civil Service as according to them his action is capable of sabotaging governments’ efforts towards the welfare of Bauchi state workforce
